Loy Krathong

Para empezar la historia... os presento el "krathong" (= guirnalda ó corona) para que veais de cerca de lo que voy a hablaros.........


To begin the story... here I present you the "krathong" (= garland or crown) so that you see what I'm going to talk about.........





... y para contaros la razón de este festival llamado "loy krathong", celebrado en toda Thailandia!!, primero os enseño un poco como se hacen estas coronas:
la base es un tronco de plátano cortado plano a la que se añaden hojas del mismo plátano dobladas de forma peculiar para que aparenten las puntas de una corona... algunos las ponen por dentro y otros por fuera de la base.
Después se rellena el interior con flores varias y variadas... la mayoría con la habitual orquídea color lila-rosado - símbolo de este pais - pero cada vez hay más colorido en los "krathong"!! El toque final son una vela y tres barras de incienso sujetadas en una flor de papel.........


... and to detail you the reason of this festival called "loy krathong", held in all Thailand!!, first I explain you how the crowns are made:
the base is a section of a banana tree and then you tear banana leaves which you fold to make points and attach onto the top of the trunk, either vertically or horizontally, to create a crown or star-like look.
Then you attach flowers, mostly the typical Thai lilac orchid, a candle and three sticks of incense in a paper flower......



Cada año surgen nuevas ideas de "krathong", apartándose de los modelos tradicionales, y los encuentras con un borde hecho de ropa, otros con forma de barcos y patos... y los más..... deliciosos(!!?), unos hechos de mazapán!! La verdad, no sé si siguen el ritual con ellos... o se los comen!!!!!


Every year they have new ideas for the "krathong", away from the traditional ones, such as these having a border made of cloth, the others with forms of ships and ducks... and the last ones made of mazipan..... but I'm not sure whether they follow the ritual with those or they eat them!!

Si bien el ritual dice que cada cual debería hacerse su propio "krathong", son muchas las personas que lo compran en los tenderetes callejeros... pero en este mi primer "loy krathong" me hice el mio propio!!!
Junto con Mª Dolors fuimos a un centro donde te enseñaban como hacerlo... y aquí nos veis orgullosas con nuestro "krathong"!!!

The ritual says you should make your own "krathong", though many people buy it in the streets... but for my first "loy krathong" I did mine myself!!! Together with Mª Dolors we were taught how to do it... and they don't look that bad, do they?

... y el ritual dice que en la luna llena de noviembre - este año el pasado miércoles día 12 - se dejen flotar los "krathong" en el agua, normalmente en el rio o el mar, pero se hace también en lagos y estanques (en donde no hay tanta aglomeración como en las veras del rio... especialmente en Bangkok!!).

La tradición explica que de esta forma se consiguen tres cosas:

1º "khop khun kha!"... dar GRACIAS por el agua (beber, ducharse, cocinar...).

2º "khotot kha!"... pedir PERDÓN por ensuciarla (mar, rios, lagos...).

3º ... es una forma de dejar en el "krathong" los problemas, enfados y mala suerte...... pide un deseo, y si cuando tu "krathong" desaparece de la vista la vela está todavía encendida, tus problemas también desaparecerán!!

Ah! La tradición también dice que quienes hacen y dejan flotar los "krathong" juntos, permanecerán siempre unidos.... por ello ves muchas parejas, grupos de amigos y familias enteras flotando sus "krathong"!
... NO SERIA FASTASTICO IMPLANTARLO EN TOOOOODO EL MUNDO!!!!!


... and the ritual says that on the full moon of November - this year last Wednesday 12th - you light the incense and candle and float your "krathong" in the water, mainly in rivers and sea, though it is also made in lakes and parks (where it is not so crowded as close to the river... specially in Bangkok!!).

The tradition is that doing this you achieve three things:
1st "khop khun kha"... give THANK YOU for the water (drink, shower, cook...).
2nd "khotot kha"... ask FORGIVENESS for dirtying it (sea, rivers, lakes...).

3rd ... leave your worries and pains in the "krathong" to float away..... ask a wish and if the light is still on when the "krathong" disappears from your view, it will come true!

By the way, tradition also says that who floats the "krathong" together will remain together... this is why many couples, groups of friends and full families go to float their "krathong"!!
... WOULDN'T IT BE FANTASTIC TO IMPLANT THIS IN THE ENTIRE WORLD!!!!!
